The Chrysalis Motel

First eclosion of the year 2009. Kept this one captive until the tornadoes passed. Hopefully some of its larva will show up for a stay at the Chrysalis Motel later this summer.

Thanks!
I've not been feeling well and am itching to move but have some health concerns to deal with before doing so.

Each year a process of collecting roaming larva goes on. They are contained and left to pupate; then placed in the box on the left. This protects them from spiders and other predators so that the waining numbers of butterflies in the area might be maintained. And it's cool to later release them and watch them fly away. Just a strange fascination I've had since childhood. And unlike humans, they are never divisive, liars, collusive, or cheaters.

Way to make safe refuge until the storm passed. Talk about a safe cocoon!

Neat!

I had a bunch of these cats feasting on parsley a couple summers ago... I watched them daily until they vanished... never could find if they had pupated somewhere or got eaten first.
